Immune Defense
A note from Dr. Schrock

"Doctor, why does every cold knock me out for two weeks?"

A healthy immune system isn't loud — it just quietly handles what comes at it. The patients who tell me they "catch everything that's going around" almost always have one or more foundational nutrients running low: Vitamin D, zinc, selenium, or a depleted microbiome from years of antibiotics.

This collection covers both halves of immunity. Innate immunity — your first responders — is supported by Beta-1,3-Glucan, Vitamin D3+K2, and zinc. Adaptive immunity — the targeted memory response — is supported by selenium, Vitamin C, and a healthy gut microbiome (70% of your immune cells live in the gut wall). Elderberry and astragalus give acute support when something's going around.

Understanding immunity

The four layers of immune defense.

Strong immunity is layered — every layer needs different raw materials. Most patients are missing nutrients on at least two layers.

  • Innate (first responders)

Macrophages and natural killer cells handle threats before your body knows what they are. Beta-1,3-Glucan primes them; Vitamin D unlocks them.

  • Adaptive (targeted memory)

T-cells and B-cells build precise, lasting immunity. Zinc and selenium are non-negotiable cofactors here.

  • Mucosal barrier

Your nose, throat, and gut lining are the first physical defense. Vitamin A, zinc, and a healthy microbiome maintain those barriers.

  • Antioxidant defense

Inflammation has to be cleaned up. Vitamin C, glutathione, and quercetin keep the immune response from damaging healthy tissue.

Why this collection exists

"Don't wait until you're sick to think about your immune system."

The mistake I see over and over: people only think about immunity in November when something is going around. By then, you're playing catch-up. The patients who stay well year-round are the ones running their D3, zinc, and beta glucan as foundational, not seasonal.

Get your Vitamin D level tested — most patients I tested ran below 40 ng/mL, well under optimal. Add a daily beta glucan or immune blend. Keep elderberry and zinc on the shelf for the first sign of symptoms.

Common questions

Immune defense — common questions.

Should I take immune support year-round or only when I'm sick?

Both — but the daily foundation matters more than the acute response. Vitamin D, zinc, and beta glucan should be in your routine all year. Elderberry, extra Vitamin C, and additional zinc are what you reach for at the first sign of symptoms.

How much Vitamin D should I take?

Most adults need 2,000–5,000 IU daily to maintain a healthy blood level. If you can get a 25(OH)D blood test, aim for 50–80 ng/mL. Always pair D3 with K2 — they work as a team to direct calcium correctly.

Is elderberry safe to take alongside the flu shot or other vaccines?

Yes — elderberry supports normal immune function, it doesn't suppress it. If you're immunocompromised or on immunosuppressants, talk to your physician first. The same goes for autoimmune conditions, where any immune-stimulating product needs medical sign-off.

What's the difference between innate and adaptive immunity?

Innate is your immediate, non-specific response — macrophages, natural killer cells, inflammation. Adaptive is your targeted, learned response — antibodies and memory T-cells that recognize specific threats. Beta glucan primarily supports innate; zinc and selenium are critical for adaptive.

Can I take zinc every day?

Yes, at sensible doses (15–30 mg daily). Higher doses (50+ mg) can deplete copper over time, so don't camp out at high doses long-term. For acute illness, short-term use of higher-dose zinc lozenges is fine.
