Turmeric
A note from Dr. Schrock

"If you only take one anti-inflammatory, take turmeric."

I have said that sentence in my office more than any other in forty years of practice. The reason is simple — no botanical anti-inflammatory has been studied more thoroughly in modern medicine than curcumin, the active polyphenol in turmeric root. Hundreds of peer-reviewed papers cover its effects on NF-κB signaling, COX-2 pathways, joint comfort, cognitive aging, and cardiovascular health.

The catch is bioavailability. Plain turmeric powder passes through most of your gut without ever reaching your bloodstream. The fix is piperine, the active in black pepper — it boosts curcumin absorption by up to 2000 percent. Every formula in this collection pairs the two. Take it with a meal that contains a little fat for best results.

What's inside

These products support a healthy inflammatory response and help maintain comfortable joint and brain function. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Always consult your healthcare provider before beginning any supplement regimen, especially if you take blood-thinning medication.

Understanding turmeric

Four reasons curcumin is the most-studied botanical in medicine.

Turmeric is not a single-mechanism herb. Curcumin touches the same biological pathways targeted by some of the best-known pharmaceuticals — without the gut, kidney, or cardiovascular toll.

  • NF-κB inflammatory pathway

Curcumin down-regulates NF-κB, the master transcription factor that switches on the body's inflammatory cascade. This is the same target many pharma drugs aim for.

  • Curcumin bioavailability

Curcumin alone is poorly absorbed. Piperine from black pepper increases absorption by up to 2000 percent — which is why every formula here pairs them.

  • Joint & connective tissue

Curcumin supports cartilage, tendons, and synovial fluid. In head-to-head studies it has matched the joint-comfort effect of common NSAIDs at standard doses.

  • Brain & cardiovascular protection

Curcumin crosses the blood-brain barrier, supports healthy BDNF levels, and maintains vascular endothelial function — a rare combination in a single botanical.

Why turmeric matters

"Turmeric is the single most-studied botanical anti-inflammatory in human medicine — and it earned the title honestly."

If a patient could only afford one supplement to support a healthy inflammatory response, this is the one I would point them to. The research base is enormous, the safety profile is excellent, and the mechanism (NF-κB modulation) sits upstream of the inflammatory cascade rather than just blocking its symptoms.

The mistake most people make is buying plain turmeric powder. Without piperine and a small amount of dietary fat, you absorb almost none of it. Take these formulas with a meal and give them 30 to 60 days. Most patients tell me they notice the difference long before the bottle is empty.

Common questions

Turmeric — common questions.

What's the standard daily dose of curcumin?

Most clinical studies use 500–1,500 mg of standardized curcumin per day, typically split into two doses. Our formulas hit the clinical range when taken as directed. There is no benefit to mega-dosing — saturation matters more than peak.

Why do I need black pepper with turmeric?

Plain curcumin is famously hard to absorb. Piperine, the active in black pepper, blocks the liver enzymes that would otherwise clear curcumin from your blood — boosting absorption by up to 2000 percent. Without it, most of what you swallow never reaches your tissues.

Can I take turmeric if I'm on blood thinners?

Curcumin has mild antiplatelet effects, which means it can theoretically add to the action of warfarin, Plavix, or daily aspirin. Always loop in your prescribing physician before adding turmeric to a blood-thinning regimen — the conversation is short but important.

Who shouldn't take turmeric?

Skip it (or check with your doctor first) if you have gallstones or active bile duct obstruction, if you are scheduled for surgery within two weeks, or if you are pregnant and have not cleared supplements with your OB. Everyone else generally tolerates it well.

Should I take turmeric with or without food?

Always with food, and ideally with a meal that contains a little fat. Curcumin is fat-soluble — a few grams of dietary fat dramatically increases how much reaches your bloodstream.
